My first professional post was assistant documents librarian at the University of Kentucky's regional depository library. I felt well prepared for it, having taken Dr. Wiley J. Williams' course on government publications and having completed a short internship in the Joint University Libraries' federal depository collection. In Lexington, it was quite educational traveling to Frankfort to locate state documents for our collection. I also received a lot of positive reinforcement for my state checklist work as well as my first article in a state association journal (1974).

At Indiana University I was privileged to work with Dean Bernard M. (Bernie) Fry on Government Publications Review, becoming a regular column editor (see 1987 book below). Plus, I was the office mate and tennis partner of the inimitable Peter Hernon for several years. We had a lively cohort including Bill Crowe, Jinnie Y. Davis, Cheryl Metoyer, and the late Nancy Sanders, among others. I also published my first national book review there as well. And, until recently, I served on GPR/JGI's editorial board with editor-in-chief Steve Zink, who kindly acknowledged me in print for "my outstanding manuscript critiques." (JGI, 1999).
