Interpretation: An important statement of the major virtues and vices as defined in the late Middle Ages, each discussed and illustrated with an exemplum. Shown here is the full-page miniature with which the Chapelet opens. The busts of eight philosophers are depicted, four on each side of the page, providing the vertical frame surrounding the virtuous man beneath the image of Christ in majesty above him; below, at the bottom of the page, the sinful man surrounded by the seven vices, all of them women, and their attributes (gluttony, luxury, envy , etc.) From the library of the Count Raoul Chandon de Brailles (1850-1908), oenologist who had a library of 20,000 manuscripts and incunabula.
