Life and Miracles of St. Francis

Creator: Saint Bonaventure, O. F. M.

Publication Place: Umbria, Italy

Date of Publication: 1311-1315

Provenance: Unknown.

Interpretation: One of the earliest copies of the Franciscan collection compiled by the Order at Assisi, ca. 1311-1312, as supporting evidence in its dispute with the dissident Spiritual Franciscans. The opening initial shown here depicts St. Francis frontally, bearded and tonsured with a gold halo, wearing a grey habit, showing the Stigmata (wounds of the passion) and holding a book cradled in his left hand.

Contributor: Richard Rouse
