1. From George, 1st Lord Lyttleton.
2. From Rev John ‘Orator’ Henley.
5. From George James (‘Gilly’)Williams..
8. From Madame La Marquise de Stainville.
9. From Charles Townshend, n.d..
15. From Mr. Rogers
Selwyn 6: From J. Sargent.
In 1751, Selwyn's father and elder brother died and he succeeded to the family property, Matson, on Robin Hood's Hill overlooking the City of Gloucester and the River Severn that had been in the family's possession since 1547.
The only references that I can find for J. Sargent in any of the numerous New Broad Streets around the country at this time are either grocers or wine merchants. If it is one of these then I would place a bet on a wine merchant! However, I do not know. If any viewer has any firm knowledge on the subject, please let me know.
The letter reads as follows:
"Sir
I am obliged to you for the lines you have favoured me with in consequence of what Mr. Simpson hath mentioned to you on my part and as you have an intention to be at your house in Kent on Sunday Morning, will do myself the pleasure of meeting you there at your times &
am Sir
Your most obedient Servt
J. Sargent
New Broad Street
Novr 29th 1751
George Selwyn Esqr."
