Design as Research Method, Spring 2016 --- IoT and Sustainability

The theme of this year’s course was the “Connected Objects and Sustainability.” We examined the contribution that the Internet of Things can make to developing more sustainable consumer practices.

Showermate Showerhead

Stephanie Erbe and Alexa Romero

Showermate showerhead combines an eco-friendly showerhead with health and personalization features to create a positive guilt-free shower experience. The embedded sensors are EPA approved and will help track how much water is being used by the user, which they can see as data visualizations on their mobile app or company webpage. In addition, a ceiling projection allows users to become increasingly aware of water usage in the shower. Algorithms constantly track user preferences to deliver the best experience. Showermate allows users to modify their behavior at their own pace and allow all kinds of users to interact with it in their own way. A user can easily reach a level of water sustainability without giving up a comfortable shower experience.

Powerbank

Emily Coxe, Eric Nord, and Geno Sanchez

Powerbank is a scalable solution for communities on an energy microgrid who want to take their power back! Part smart meter and storage manager, part energy marketplace, Powerbank enables the buying and selling of locally produced renewable energy. Instead of buying and selling electricity from a local utility company, Powerbank users buy and sell electricity from each other! Powerbank’s low-profile unit is installed near your home battery, and is suitable for adoption by communities with existing microgrids, or for pre-installation in planned housing developments. Powerbank opens up numerous possibilities for how a community manages its power and maximizes sustainability. Powerbank takes the inherent complexity of managing a power grid and makes it accessible.

Bioluminescent Shower Curtain

Kip Holcomb and Anh Kiet Ngo

Presentation

A plastic shower curtain or glass enclosure is a necessity that few households are without. This creates a prime opportunity to pair the common shower curtain with technology’s advancements. Bio-Gel Bath Works brings to the market a bioluminescent shower curtain that is a renewable source of energy. Using ground-breaking research from esteemed universities, fine circuitry embedded within the curtain can gather data regarding the health of the algae and use an embroidered antenna to transmit that information to a smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

The efficiency of bioluminescense is 98%, the most efficient of all sources of light. Using heat or electricity loses 90% of energy to heat and UV. Proper development of bioluminescent energy can ease the impact of global warming and the scarcity of resources.

After the initial purchase of $20.00, a subscription agreement is processed through a smartphone app that allows the user to schedule a replacement every 4 months at a cost of $5. This is a small price to pay for the hygienic benefits and energy savings from the reduced need for lighting in the bathroom.

Reena Antonishak, Mary Priest, Rebecca Russell

EcoBin is a simple, earth-friendly solution to monitor your trash impact. EcoBin's intended purpose is to recognize the type and amount of trash discarded. EcoBin is divided into two sections: Recyclables and Non-recyclables. The user will discard their waste into the corresponding bin and the amount of waste will be recognized by connected sensors. The sensors will provide users with metrics on what they are discarding (recyclable vs non-recyclable) how much they are discarding. The sensing technologies are anticipated to enlighten users on their waste habits. The data being sensed will be transferred to an application, via cloud computing, and made accessible by mobile device. Through the app, users will also gain insight about their usage trends over time and can receive tips for to reduce waste. EcoBin focuses on the informational problem of trash, drawing attention to waste, as opposed to ignoring it.
